Tismana Monastery – spirituality and history at the foot of the Vâlcan Mountains
Perched on a rock at the foot of the Vâlcan Mountains, Tismana Monastery is the oldest monastic settlement in Wallachia that has been continuously operating. Founded in the 14th century by Saint Nicodim, the monastery combines Byzantine architecture with local elements and dominates the Tismana Valley like a white fortress. Throughout history, it has been a spiritual and cultural center and a place of refuge – here, Romania's treasure was hidden during World War II. At present, the monastery remains a place of peace and contemplation, surrounded by forests, springs and trails that preserve the unaltered atmosphere of centuries.

Location: Tismana city, Gorj county, 36 km northwest of Târgu Jiu Access: -From Târgu Jiu → DN67 towards Drobeta-Turnu Severin → DJ672A to the monastery gate -Asphalted road, accessible all year round -Parking is at the base of the complex, with an easy walk uphill Tip: At the foot of the hill is Saint Nicodim's Spring, ideal for a short stop before the climb

-Spring and autumn: the surrounding forests create a superb setting, pleasant temperatures for hiking and photos -Summer: crowded around August 15th (Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Feast) -Winter: special atmosphere, more secluded and quiet, recommended for contemplation
